FLAT ROCK -- Sophomore Marlena Franks, 15, and freshman Natalie Andrews, 14, opened bottles of semi-permanent hair color. The jars were filled with colors from the whole spectrum of the rainbow, and the hair of Dr. Helen Owen, principal of Henderson County Early College High on Blue Ridge Community College's campus, no longer was safe.

"It's the culminating activity for a fundraiser," Owen explained.

Early College students raised money to help the donkeys at Historic Johnson Farm. Before Christmas, Owen got word from farm volunteers Barbara Blaine and Shirley McGee that they needed funds to feed the animals. The cost of a bale of hay has increased in recent months, and cold weather has increased the animals' appetites.

Owen and the school started the "Hay Bales for Hair Color" fundraiser. If the students raised $350, Owen would match the amount and they could dye her hair. If they raised $400, the hair of Rick Martinez, a math teacher, no longer was safe.

The students raised $230.70, which Owen did match. When they went to the farm to present the money, they found out the community had donated $270, bringing the total to $500.70.

"The bet's fun," said Martinez, who decided to go green. Owen went with a rainbow stripe.

Martinez requested that he not end up looking like Shrek. Owen wanted her bangs to be purple, her favorite color.

"Mr. Martinez!" exclaimed Owen. "You look wonderful."

Andrews herself has blue hair and, according to Owen, for the first few weeks of school was sporting a different hair color each week. Owen said she joked that one day she would let Andrews dye her hair.

When the fundraising opportunity came about, Andrews jumped at the chance.

"I can't believe I'm dying my principal's hair," she said, smearing more hair color onto Owen's head.

Martinez said the green was lighter than he expected.
